Kathy Kohner Zuckerman: The Real Girl called "Gidget"
How awesome it feels when someone makes new discoveries or learns about something you never thought you would know. Well that's how I felt when I first learned about her in a college course that I took called History of Rock N' Roll. When the instructor was teaching us about Surf music from the 50s like The Beach Boys and Jan and Dean and when the teacher was talking to us about surfing culture that was popular back then. He also mentioned the movie "Gidget" a movie that greatly inspired and sparked an interest in many teenagers to learn to surf and some to just love the way of life that a surfer lives. Hearing and learning about Gidget just nurtured an interest and a deeo couriusness to learn more about her. I felt ever so proud at discovering that there is also a book about her, that later on by reading the novel I found out that the main character Franzie is actually Kathy Kohner Zuckerman, the girl called Gidget also a name that was adopted by her Malibu Beach friends who also happened to be surfers. What is more interesting about the novel is that Kathy's father, Frederick Kohner actually wrote the novel basing her own daughters experiences going to Malibu Beach to surf, meeting a group of male surfers who all had nicknames, and falling in love for the first time.
